SPECIAL STITCHES
To create the texture, we will be working popcorn stitches.
To complete a popcorn stitch:
Work 3 hdc in same stitch, then drop the loop you were left with and remove crochet hook. Insert hook in the first hdc of group. While keeping it on this stitch, pick up the loop you previously dropped. Pull that loop through the first HDC you have on the hook. Ch 1 to secure.
I work the popcorn stitches so they pop out towards me. You can make them the other way where they face away from you, but make sure you pop them back towards you while working the pattern!
notes
This pattern is worked in rows to form a rectangle. The rectangle is seamed along the side and the bottom is closed shut. We’ll stuff the pumpkin with Polyfil. We finish the pumpkin with a cinnamon stick for the stem and suede cord to decorate. This pattern is worked in the small size with the medium and large sizes worked in the parentheses that follow.
pattern
Row 1: Ch 12, work 1 sc in 2nd ch from the hook and in each across, turn— 11sts.
Row 2: Ch 1 (not included in st count here and throughout) work 1 hdc in blo of next 2 sts, *popcorn in blo of next st, 1 hdc in blo of next st; rep from * around until one st remains, 1 hdc in blo of last stitch, turn— 11 sts.
Rows 3-5: Ch 1, work 1 sc in blo of each st across, turn— 11 sts.
Note: In row 3, you will be working into the chain one from the row before, & disregard the top of the popcorn st. (see picture below)
Rows 6-17: Rep rows 2-5 [3] times— 11sts.
Rows 18: Rep row 2 one time— 11sts.
Rows 19-20: Ch 1, work 1 sc in blo of each st across, turn— 11 sts.
After the last row, fold the rectangle in half with RS facing each other. Sl st edges together. Do not turn. Ch 1, work 10 sc along the bottom edge. Sl st to first sc to join. — 10 sts. Ch 1, sc2tog around, sl st to first sc to join— 5 sts. Fasten off.
Finishing
Using a tapestry needle and the long tail, weave the bottom shut by going through each st (flo) around. Pull tight to secure. Stuff with Polyfill. Weave through every other row around the top and pull to secure. Leave room to add the cinnamon stick! Use the tail to cinch the pumpkin. Thread the needle up through the bottom center of the pumpkin up through the center top. Continue cinching between each row of popcorn stitches. When finished, tie a know at the bottom of pumpkin & weave in ends. FINISHED!
