In this blog post, I’ll show you an easy and time-efficient way to calculate your material costs. By the end, you’ll be saving so much time and maximizing your profits!
How much yarn did you use for the project?
Determining the amount of yarn you used is crucial for accurate cost calculation. The best way to do this is by weighing it. Simply grab a scale and weigh the yarn you used. Easy peasy!
Calculate the cost of the yarn: To determine the cost of the yarn, divide the full price of the skein by its weight. This will give you the cost per unit weight (e.g., cost per gram). I recommend calculating based on the full price, as you aren’t guaranteed a sale every time.
Example: Let’s say the Bernat blanket skein costs $11.99 and weighs 300 grams. The cost per gram would be $11.99/300 = $0.03996. Multiply this by the amount of yarn used (e.g., 28 grams) to calculate the total cost of yarn for your project.
Handling multiple colors:
If you’re working with multiple colors of the same yarn type, the colors won’t affect the cost, as they have the same price. However, if you’re using a different type of yarn, weigh it separately before adding it to the project!
Determine other material costs the same way
Apply the same approach to calculate costs for other materials you used. For example, if you used polyfil, divide the full price of a 20 oz pack ($9.99) by its weight. Multiply this by the amount used (e.g., 0.2 oz) to calculate the material cost.
Calculating additional materials
For items like safety eyes, determine the cost per unit by dividing the price by the quantity included in the pack. Multiply this by the amount used in your project to find the cost of those items.
Example: If a pack of safety eyes costs $12.99 and contains 462 pieces, the cost per safety eye would be $12.99/462 = $0.0281. Multiply this by the number of safety eyes used (e.g., 2) to calculate the cost for safety eyes.
